Helping educators plan for the unknown

Elementary, secondary, and higher education professionals are working tirelessly to design and implement safe and effective hybrid and remote learning modalities to satisfy all types of learners.

In New Jersey, the Department of Education’s plan to resume education, titled, “The Road Back,” tasks school administrators with satisfying a number of objectives under the plan’s four main pillars: conditions for learning, leadership and planning, policy and funding, and continuity of learning.

To ease the remote-learning growing pains, the School of Education and the Office of Alumni Engagement have teamed together to present “The 2020 School Year – Planning for the Unknown: A panel discussion for educators” on Thursday, August 6. The webinar, led by Suzanne McCotter, dean of the School of Education, will discuss suggestions for both remote and hybrid learning and offer suggestions on handling the concerns of parents.

“We keep hearing that this school year will be unlike any other, and in this webinar, we’re hoping to help teachers get ready for the unknown situation that is coming up,” McCotter says. “While it’s true that this year will be different than others, the hallmarks of what goes into being a good teacher will be the same: good teachers are flexible, creative, and responsive to student needs.”

Joining McCotter will be Jonathan Davis, assistant professor, education administration and secondary education; Lauren Madden, associate professor, elementary and early childhood education; and Michael Smith, associate professor, special education language and literacy.

A second webinar for parents of students, presented by McCotter and Scott Rocco ’94, superintendent of Hamilton public schools, is also scheduled for August 19.
